The Big Bang Theory boys, making smart the new sexy?

Thanks to TV shows like The Big Bang Theory and characters like Tony Stark in the Ironman movies, intelligence has now become enormously sexy. A man who can grasp the workings of the universe, rattle off complex equations or shoot down common ignorant beliefs with his factual knowledge is now in demand. If the current "nerdy chick" frenzy that has hit the porn scene is anything to go by, smart is definitely the new sexy.

The mystery solving Sherlock Holmes uses rational thought and deduction to bust baddies all whilst baffling even the ever loyal Watson with his quirky and whimsical investigative talents.

A Newspaper Association of America ad campaign first coined the phrase, "Smart is the New Sexy'' in 2011 in a drive to promote U.S newspapers. One such ad reads, "Be able to find Iran on a map. Know what city council is up to, because a little depth looks great on you''. The intention of the ad campaign was to get people reading more newspapers. The resulting effect was likely that more Americans became aware of what is happening in the world (and they probably also bought more newspapers & logged onto online newspaper sites).

Despite the intellectually gifted portion of the population existing, arguably since the dawn of man, one has to question why this is only now becoming an attractive quality in a partner. Is this just a fad? Or have humans finally reached the age in which the intellectual stimulation a partner provides is more valuable than physical stimulation?

My view on the matter is that once you go brainy, u never go back. Imagine dating a person who can talk to you about constellations and the genetic make up of roses as opposed to a person whose scope for intelligent conversation is restricted to how so out-of-fashion that shirt is or the exact position of their favourite football team on the English Premier League standings table. Sure, the latter is fine and dandy if mixed with a sprinkling of intelligent conversation, but too much mind numbing, under stimulating conversation is far from healthy.

A good balance is what one should strive for. Whilst dating the girl who aspires to find the cure for AIDS might be an intimidating match, she might just be exactly what you need amongst the hub-bub of your everyday activities and conversations with the average person.

 

It also deserves to be mentioned that not all nerds are super smart. They may just be into gaming, sci-fi, art, etc. Such a broad description could describe just about anybody (although that somebody sounds damn interesting to me). So, my concluding remark is that anyone can be sexy, if what is attractive about them is indeed attractive to somebody... however, being a down-to-earth smartie pants will give you a whole new level of sexual appeal in the years to come! ;o)
